Curriculum

Vale Verde International School offers a wide and balanced curriculum based on the British National Curriculum for Key Stages 1, 2, 3 and 4 and leading to internationally recognised qualifications – the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and the Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) – administered by the Cambridge University International Exams.

Pupils in KS1 and KS2 (Years 1 to 6) follow a bilingual programme whereby key subjects such as Maths, Science, Geography and History are offered in English while Music, Drama and Arts and Crafts are taught in Portuguese. At the end of year 6, students transfer to the Secondary School.

Pupils in Years 7 and 8 follow a common curriculum of English, Maths, General Science, French, Portuguese, Geography, History, I.T., PSHE, Art and Design, Food Technology, Music, Drama and Physical Education.

In Year 9 individual Sciences are introduced (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) and Business Studies is also added to the time table. Subject to demand, pupils may study Health and Nutrition from Year 10, leading to a double award. As from Year 10, pupils are also offered the option of English Literature as an IGCSE course.

In Years 10 and 11 a limited option system is put into operation allowing pupils to “play to their strengths” while ensuring that they continue with priority subjects, leading to IGCSE’s in 7 or 8 of these.

Increasingly throughout the school I.T. is assuming the role of a means to learn and exercise other subjects as well as an independent discipline in its own right. Information Technology is a compulsory subject until the end of Year 10 and pupils are introduced to I.T.  from Year 1.

VVIS is a leading International School in the Algarve. The school is licensed by the Ministry of Education and is a regular member of the European Council of International Schools (ECIS)
